At first when people here that someone is training at Scranton Mixed Martial Arts they often assume that the student is purely learning how to ‘fight’ or defend themselves. They might think the person needs a fun new hobby or is trying to get back into shape with a fun and exciting activity. What many people fail to realize is that most of our students really enjoy learning something new, growing as a person and being able to set goals and reach them.
When you are constantly learning new things, growing as a person and reaching goals you will feel great. Everything in your daily life will become a bit easier. You will have less stress. You will be happier and in a better mood throughout the day/week. Dont worry you will still learn the most effective forms of self defense out there at the best martial arts academy in NEPA and you will continue to grow physically stronger, get leaner and improve your health in many other areas.
However it is the mental benefits that many peope love about Scranton MMA and why our members always look forward to training. Of course learning a new choke is great, learning a new punch / kick combo is fun and learning how throw someone is awesome but it can be even more rewarding to realize the mental benefits that come with improving as a person and setting and reaching new goals.
Think back in your life how great you felt when you accomplished something big after working hard. Maybe a project at school or for your job. Now imagine getting that type of reward, feeling that great over and over again because you are training Mixed Martial Arts! It may be hard for some people to realize that training will make you feel that good and that is why we encourage anyone who is interested to give it a shot and see what you think.
Everyone is welcome to try out Scranton MMA FREE of charge and see if they enjoy the physical and mental benefits that training with us will give them. It may not be for everyone but we would like everyone who is stressed out, looking to get back in shape, bored with their gym routine, looking for a new hobby, or anyone who thinks martial arts could be fun to give us a call or send us a quick message and give it a shot. It will cost you nothing and you may just find a great new activity that will reward you in many ways!
One of the most important lessons you will learn while training and studying any good martial art is the importance of giving. You will receive a great deal along your journey from other martial artists. Other people will give you their time, their knowledge and much more in order to help you learn and grow as a person and as a martial artists. In order to keep receiving it is important that we all learn that we must keep giving as well.
This weekend Scranton Mixed Martial Arts held at 100% Free seminar at our academy in Scranton Pa. This seminar was a Women’s Only Self Defense Seminar. We had a great turnout for the event and it was a great success because everyone who attended learned a lot about self defense and had a great time as well. All of the attendees asked when we would hold another event and we are already working on setting a date in July for our next event.
The Seminar was led by Jess Papi one of our Gracie Jiu Jitsu instructors and Kids BullyShield Instructors. Jess has a great ability to communicate with new students and help them grasp the basic concepts, movements and techniques of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Jess did an awesome job from start to finish in explaining the moves, why they were important for females to learn and helping the students with the moves if they had any problems.
Jess ran the show but she also had a few people help her out as well. First she had help from one of the most experienced Gracie Jiu Jitsu practioners in all of NEPA Dom Passanati. Dom has trained in Gracie Jiu Jitsu since 1998! His wealth of experience really shined during this seminar as he was able to make everyone feel comfortable with the subject matter and the techniques. Dom was able to share some great tips and tricks that helped many of the students pick up the techniques really quickly.
In addition to Jess and Dom we had three other instructors help out at this seminar. Stephen Peragallo, Frank Alogna and Tom McGuire also assisted during the seminar. Having a total of five instructors on the mat really helped make this a great seminar. The students got a lot of attention and guidance the whole time. Many of the students commented that the amount of instruction they received helped them greatly. If anyone had a question it was easy for an instructor to come over answer the question without having the seminar slow down. In fact since their were so many instructors the seminar moved at a great pace. Moves were shown, explained and then practiced by all in attendance.
Also in true Scranton MMA fashion we had a few volunteers step up at the last minute to help even more. Now at this time we already had five instructors but we had a few students on hand who asked if they could help in any way. That is what Scranton MMA is all about. Helping, Giving back especially to new students! The last minute volunteers did a great job of either holding pads for the students while they practiced striking or volunteering to get choked or armbarred by our new students. This added a bit more reality to the training by having the women practice the moves on adult males and it also kept the females safer by not having to choke or armbar each other!
We are so glad that everyone had a great time and liked the seminar. It wa a great atmosphere and everyone got to learn some really great techniques as well. This weekend the Scranton MMA Judo competition team headed over to paterson New Jersey to compete in the Summer Slam Judo Tournament. This tournament brings out players from the very best clubs in the country and Scranton MMA was very glad to take part of this event. Members from Scranton MMA have been going to this tournament for years and years and we are very happy to see some of our new members and new competitors go to this tournament.
Going to this tournament we knew we would have our hands full. We had four kids competing for the first time and to be honest most of them have very little Judo experience or time training Judo. Despite the lack of experience all of the kids did GREAT! Each kid who was competing for the first time was able to win at least one match and all of them placed in their division. One of our members had the opportunity to compete against the best player in the country at that age and despite losing it was a great opportunity for our player to see what a high level competitor is like at that age.
Many of our members were able to utilize their Gracie Jiu Jitsu experience at this Judo tournament. A lot of people do not realize that there are basically four ways to win a Judo match and three of them are on the ground. So obviously being good at Gracie Jiu Jitsu helps out a great deal. We had two of our kids who were competing in Judo for the first time win matches by passing the guard, establishing yoko shiho gatame or Side Control and then obtaining Tate Shiho Gatame or the mount. A Judo match will end if one person can maintain any type of side control or mount for 20 seconds. Both of these kids displayed great technique and control during the match and it was great to see their BJJ training pay off for them in a big tournament.
BJJ also helped all of our members either stay safe while they were on the ground getting attacked or allowed them to escape from a bad position that would have lost them the match if they were not training in BJJ. We did also have one of our members win via submission in a gold medal match. This player was able to trip or knock his opponent down and then continued into groundwork and passed the guard, established side control, then switched to side control on the opposite side, trapped the arm and applied a paper cutter choke just before time expired to win the match and secure the gold medal in the division. That same transition from side body on one side to side body on the other side is something that the BJJ instructors at Scranton MMA have taught him and drilled with him countless times and it paid off in a big way at the tournament.
At the end of the day Scranton MMA finished up with 2 gold medals, one Silver medal and two Bronze medasl. Most of those medals came from our kids who were competing for the first time which made all of the coaches and parents very happy!!!!
Please take a minute when you are at the academy to congratulate THE KIDS for going out and competing and testing their martial arts skills in a tournament. It can be very stressful for a kid to get the courage to go out and compete. Luckily they all had a great time, made some friends and all would like to compete again sometime soon!
Here are a couple pics from the tournament. You can see a lot more by going to our Scranton MMA FaceBook Page.
