Scranton MMA would like to remind everyone that this Saturday, November 19th, 2011, all regularly scheduled classes are postponed. The reason …Jiu Jitsu lifestyle day is back at Scranton MMA!
On Saturday, November 19th, head Gracie Jiu Jitsu instructor, Jeff Reese will conduct a two hour bonus workshop from noon to two. This seminar will focus on a devastating arsenal of chokes and cranks fittingly termed “The Dirty Dozen”. The “Dirty Dozen” is a series of interlocking submissions that will have your opponent reeling from start to tap! Jeff developed the “dirty dozen” during slotstatoridge his years of traveling on the road to train with some of the world”s best bjj instructors: a submission from Royce, paired with a technique from Rodrigo, added to the move learned from Rob Kahn, etc, etc …and soon the “dirty dozen” was birthed!
Following the seminar, Scranton MMA will host a special screening of Ultimate Gracie, an exciting and revealing documentary about the origins and impact of Gracie Jiu Jitsu on modern martial arts. A buffet will be provided during the movie. The cost of this event is $25 and is open to all members of Scranton MMA and Keystone CrossFit.
The month of October was a busy month for Scranton MMA members; daily training, seminars, special events, tournaments and through it all one member stood tall. The student of the month for october is JOE ROSSI! Joe is one of the mavericks of the children’s program at Scranton MMA. Joseph began training 5 years ago at the age of 8 and quickly took to the jiu jitsu ways. Now at age 14 Joseph is a full time member og the adult program and recently earned his first stripe on his green belt. Joe had one of the highest class attendance rating for the month of October and spent equal time training in his self defense and sportive techniques. On and off the mat he smiles and is quick to help with welcoming new students into our family. Joe is a great example of what a Scranton MMA is all about .
Here are a few quick facts about Joe. Joe is a 14 year old native of Archbald, Pa and enjoys Gracie jiu jitsu, mma, and basketball. When asked about his experience at Scranton MMA he said, “What I love most about Scranton MMA is there is so much more than jiu jitsu!” Joe recently entered the UGC Tournament in Hamburg, PA as an adult. Despite being the youngest competitor in his division by far Joe fought his way to a well earned bronze medal. Congrats Joe!
PA Cage Fight Series returns to Scranton, PA yet again on Black Friday! November 25, 2011, at Lackawanna College mixed martial arts fighters from all over the United States converge to go to battle inside the cage. Among the talent are two Scranton MMA fighters, Gary Peters and Terry Evans.
Terry Evans, Gracie Jiu Jitsu blue belt, makes his in ring debut at 170 lbs. against Sean Oliveri. This is a classic Old Forge – Riverside rivalry and is sure to bring the intensity this intercity feud is known for! Terry has assured victory for Riverside (Go Vikes!)
Gary Peters, Gracie Jiu Jitsu purple belt, faces off against Dave Spadell, Jr. for the PA Cage Fight Welterweight tile. Both fighters are 5-2 and both are coming off recent victories. The stage is set for a classic style versus style fight; Peters, a highly technical Gracie Jiu Jitsu fighter and Spadell, a gritty street tough fighter – this will be an exciting fight and will most definitely be in contention for fight of the night.
